Buzz: The Fun Math Game That Builds Strategic Thinking

How to Play Buzz

1. Have the class stand in a circle on the mat.

2. Choose a “Buzz number” — for example, 13.

3. Pick a student to start. They say any number between 1 and 13 aloud (e.g., “6”).

4. The next child says the next number (“7”), and the counting continues around the circle.

5. When the counting reaches the number 13, the child says “Buzz” instead of 13 — and sits down.

6. The next child starts a new round by choosing a number between 1 and 13 to begin the count again.

7. The game continues until only one child remains standing — the winner!

💡 Students quickly realise that if they say 12, they can pass the “Buzz” onto the next person — which makes the endgame full of strategy!

• Number Fluency: Rapid counting forwards.

• Strategic Thinking: Planning ahead to avoid being the one to say “Buzz.”

Easy Variations

• Younger children: Start the counting at 1 every time and focus only on practising counting skills.

• Older children: Add more strategy by letting them pick any number to start the count.

• Skip counting challenge: Instead of counting by 1s, try skip counting by 2s, 5s, or 10s!
